BEYOND THE STARS

It is frequent to hear in economic seminars or read in academic papers that an effect is economically significant or economically important. Yet, the economic literature is vague on what economic importance means and how it should be measured. In this paper, I show that existing measures of economic importance are flawed and misused. I derive a new metric that measures, in percentage terms, the contribution of each explanatory variable to deviations in the dependent variable, ceteris paribus. As an illustration, the method is applied to study the determinants of migration and the determinants of fertility.     

Price discovery and volatility spillover in spot and futures markets: evidences from steel-related commodities in China

The price discovery and spillover effect are significant indicators in futures markets. This study examines the price discovery and spillover effects using vector error correction model and generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedastic for seven types of steel products in Chinese spot and futures markets. The results show that the price discovery exists in all of steel futures market. It is also confirmed that futures prices in all items are mainly leading spot prices via permanent-transitory and information share. In the results of spillover effects, it is found that wire rod, coking coal, coke and silico-manganese have the effects between spot and futures market. In rebar market, there is the spillover effect from spot to futures. This information about futures prices can help the market participants to make decisions when they predict the spot prices.     

知识产权保护、进口贸易与创新型领军企业创新

本文首先从理论上分析了知识产权保护通过进口贸易影响企业创新的作用机制,随后,利用中国海关贸易数据与中国工业企业数据,实证分析了知识产权保护对企业创新的影响,并检验了知识产权保护通过进口贸易影响企业创新的作用机制。研究结果表明:(1)知识产权保护水平提高,能够显著促进创新型领军企业的创新。(2)从影响机制来看,知识产权保护水平提高,能够显著提升民营企业、专利密集型行业企业以及出口企业的进口规模,进而促进创新;能够显著提升民营企业和专利密集型行业企业的进口产品种类,进而促进创新;能够显著提升出口企业的进口产品质量,进而促进创新。中国正处在实施创新驱动发展战略的重要阶段,应重视并充分发挥知识产权保护与进口贸易对我国企业创新的促进作用。     

能效改善与能源节约：助力还是阻力

研究目标：测算中国分行业的能源回弹效应与综合能耗系数。研究方法：通过编制含能源实物流量的价值型能源投入产出可比价序列表，测算出能源回弹效应与综合能耗系数，结合行业综合能耗情况分析了能源回弹效应的行业异质性。研究发现：各行业在能耗方面表现迥异，能源回弹效应也存在典型的行业异质性；中国整体经济能源回弹程度并不高，能效改善可以有效节约能源，但整体经济低能源回弹的表象也掩盖了部分行业能源效率无改善和高能耗行业高能源回弹的事实。研究创新：从系统与结构的视角审视了行业的综合能耗情况，并给出了一种基于能源投入产出表的能源回弹效应计算方法。研究价值：有助于提出整体经济结构优化与节能减排的行业政策。     

金融服务开放与制造业企业出口产品质量:影响机制与经验证据

文章从理论上分析了金融服务开放影响制造业企业出口产品质量提升的动态演变过程，并利用2004-2013年中国金融服务进出口和中国工业企业数据对理论推演进行验证。结果表明：金融服务开放显著促进了制造业出口产品质量升级，且金融服务引进来对制造业企业出口产品质量提升的作用略大于金融服务走出去所产生的作用；从不同贸易方式、不同衡量指标、不同企业所有制等方面对此进行检验均证实了金融服务开放对制造业出口产品质量升级的正向作用；影响机制检验和扩展分析显示，创新效应、金融服务"引进来"对"走出去"的推动、垂直专业化效应和本地吸收效应影响着金融开放对企业出口产品质量升级的作用。文章的研究发现有助于为进一步扩大金融服务开放来推动制造业高质量发展提供有价值的政策依据。     

Spillovers between sovereign CDS and exchange rate markets: The role of market fear

As important variables in financial market, sovereign credit default swaps (CDS) and exchange rate have correlations and spillovers. And the volatility spillovers between the two markets become further complicated with the effect of market fear caused by extreme events such as global pandemic. This paper attempts to explore the complex interactions within the “sovereign CDS-exchange rate” system by adopting the forecast error variance decomposition method. The results show that there is a relatively close linkage between the two markets and the total spillover index of the system is dynamic. For most of the past, the exchange rate has a higher spillover effect on the sovereign CDS than vice versa. Moreover, after the market fear variables are introduced, the “sovereign CDS-exchange rate” system and market fear variables present bidirectional spillovers. The results of the study have particular significance for maintaining the financial stability and preventing risk contagion between markets.     

非国有大股东对国企超额雇员的影响:成本效应还是激励效应

基于竞争理论的国企改革思路强调减少政策性负担摊派,基于产权理论的改革思路侧重于引入非国有资本,以解决产权不清晰与所有者缺位问题.本文尝试融合两种理论,以国企超额雇员问题为研究对象,从非国有大股东视角探究混合所有制改革成效.研究发现:非国有大股东能够显著降低国企超额雇员,减弱超额雇员对公司价值的损害作用,且该治理作用会随非国有大股东相对力量的提高而增强;从作用机制来看,该治理作用不仅表现为劳动力成本尤其是员工薪酬的节约,还表现为内部薪酬差距和管理层薪酬业绩敏感性的提高,兼具成本效应与激励效应;该作用在地区就业压力较小、劳动密集度较低以及劳动保护水平更低的环境下更为显著.     

能源回弹效应下高碳产业低碳转型过程中的技术突变性

考虑能源回弹效应下，分析高碳产业低碳技术突变技术门槛，发现技术碳减排存在由量变到质变的门槛效应，另外还发现能源回弹对门槛效应具有显著影响。运用Hansen门限面板模型、结合CD生产函数的能源回弹模型发现：①不考虑能源回弹效应，高碳产业低碳化过程中的技术突变存在两个门槛；②考虑能源回弹作用，将减少为一个门槛，并且将延长高碳产业完成低碳技术突变所需时间。因此，为加快高碳产业低碳技术突变，有效减少碳排放，一方面应缓解能源回弹效应的影响，对能源回弹效应较大的高碳产业采取实时监控，对能源回弹较小的高碳产业采取定期检查和不定期抽检方式监控；货币政策、财政政策和产业政策相互配合，在高碳产业拉动经济增长的同时，最大限度控制能源回弹效应。另一方面，市场手段和政府职能双管齐下，协助企业低碳技术升级和设备改造，优化税收结构，弥补低碳技术升级导致的负外部性，完善高碳产业转移或市场退出机制。     

Forecasting volatility and co-volatility of crude oil and gold futures: Effects of leverage,jumps, spillovers,and geopolitical risks

To forecast the covariance matrix for the returns of crude oil and gold futures, this paper examines the effects of leverage, jumps, spillovers, and geopolitical risks by using their respective realized covariance matrices. To guarantee the positive definiteness of the forecasts, we consider the full BEKK structure on the conditional Wishart model. By the specification, we can flexibly divide the direct and spillover effects of volatility feedback, negative returns, and jumps. The empirical analysis indicates the benefits of accommodating the spillover effects of negative returns, and the geopolitical risks indicator for modeling and forecasting the covariance matrix.     

FDI与OFDI溢出对高技术产业区域创新的门槛效应研究

选取2003-2016年省域高技术产业面板数据，以R&D人员投入为门槛变量，实证分析FDI与OFDI溢出对高技术产业区域创新的非线性影响。得出以下稳健性结论：FDI和OFDI溢出对高技术产业区域创新具有双门槛效应，FDI溢出呈现先升后降的特征，而OFDI溢出则呈现先降后升特征；R&D人员投入、R&D资本积累、城镇化水平有利于高技术产业区域创新，而金融成熟度未产生明显推动作用；政府支持可能对R&D人力投入较高省份产生抑制作用；2003-2016年跨越R&D人员投入中、高门槛的省份在不断增加。
